In the dead of winter, the Alaskan nights are dark, long and cold... REALLY cold! This is the time of year when Alaska's most spectacular celestial show occurs... the northern lights!
While the northern lights happen year round and at any time of the day or nigh, they are mostly only visible at night and in northern latitudes... hence Alaska is the perfect place to see them... or perhaps that should "be the perfect place to possibly see them"! As with most things in life there are no guarantees and viewing the northern lights is no exception. You'll need a combination of clear skies, high aurora activity and a generous helping of luck to view them at their awe inspiring best.
If you do see them it will be an experience you'll never forget. In fact with the all excitement you might actually forget that your fingers have gone numb and you eye lids have nearly frozen shut! Just remember not to whistle at them! The Inuit believe that if you do, the lights will swoop down and spirit you away!
So bundle up and get ready for a rare "on-demand" north lights show... right here in the comfort of your own home!
